Five SUP Yoga Myths Debunked

What is SUP yoga? Simply put, it's yoga performed on a stand-up paddle board, usually practiced on calm bodies of water such as bays, harbors, or lakes, and it is one of the fastest-growing water activities in the U.S. - and the world - right now. And it's actually easier than it looks!


1. Are there any cool benefits of SUP yoga?


There are so many benefits of SUP yoga! Besides being a full-body workout (most SUP yoga sessions begin with a short paddle, which works your arms, shoulders, back, legs, and core), you'll most likely be able to appreciate the beautiful scenery around you and breathe in the fresh air, resulting in a relaxing and calming experience. It relieves stress, makes you focus at the task (or position) at hand, increases flexibility, and gets you outdoors.



2. Do I need to know how to do yoga to participate?


While it will help knowing a few basic yoga poses, you definitely don't need to be a yogi to do SUP yoga. In fact, SUP yoga generally requires different muscles than yoga on land, and requires deep focus and balance to keep your paddle board steady when holding or transitioning between poses. And if you already practice yoga (on land), SUP yoga will compliment and help refine it, and make you stronger.


Your instructor will show you the basics on how to fall and get back on your board, how to stand up and stay balanced, and teach you how to breathe and hold yoga poses. Most also begin their classes with an on-land demo.



3. Do I need special gear?


No. If you attend a SUP yoga class, the company will supply you with all the gear you need - except, of course, your bathing suit for women or board shorts for men. An optional rash guard - a short- or long-sleeved shirt, usually with built-in SPF, is something you might already own that you can also wear.


4. Can I use my own paddle board to do SUP yoga?


If you already own a paddle board, you certainly can use it to do SUP yoga. But if you really want to get serious about it and depending on the type of paddle board you already own, you'll probably want to invest in a 'real' SUP paddle board, which are wider, more stable, and with a flat-shaped deck.


5. Do I need to make reservations to attend a class?


Every SUP yoga outfitter is different and reservations depend largely on where and when you want to attend a class. It's best if you contact your local SUP yoga company to find out - popular destinations in the summer usually require reservations, since class sizes are often limited.
